Attention all potential songwriters ready to grow to the next level: Internationally acclaimed artist JohnSmith (yes he spells it as all one word!) will lead a songwriting workshop on Saturday, March 12, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the St. Mane Theatre in Lanesboro, Minnesota. Cost will be $20-$40, “Whatever you can afford!” says JohnSmith.
JohnSmith Singer Songwriter
Workshop participants will be encouraged to cultivate their own unique voice as songwriters. Beginners welcome! Participants need not even be able to play a musical instrument. JohnSmith will explore the technical ‘nuts and bolts’ of songwriting—verse, chorus, bridge, melody, rhythm, rhymes, etc. Through visualization exercises, group performances, and personal demonstrations, the workshop format will coax and cultivate each person’s inner muse. In a supportive workshop climate, participants will be giving and receiving constructive feedback as a group. JohnSmith will assist individuals with experimenting and incorporating this feedback into works, bridging inspiration and craft. If there is interest, he may discuss issues involved with recording and live performances. Participants should bring an open heart and a curious mind, a simple recording device, and any samples of songs/poems they find inspiring. Registration: day of class at the St. Mane Theatre, 206 Parkway Ave N. in Lanesboro, Minn., or in advance at the Lanesboro Arts Center, 103 Parkway Ave N. in Lanesboro, 507-467-2446, or via the website www.lanesboroarts.org (then go to Education – Classes & Workshops).
Later that evening, JohnSmith will perform a Benefit Concert at 7:30 p.m., raising funds for revitalization and renovation of the St. Mane Theatre. Wisconsin-based singer & songwriter JohnSmith is widely travelled, delighting audiences with song lyrics that are finely shaped and powerfully moving, and voiced with a spirit and soulfulness that is earned through the embracing of the joys and the pains of life lived to its fullest. John-Smith is a talented word-smith and a Bard. . . The role of a Bard in any society is to hold up a mirror to that society, to convey and reveal – through the mysterious alchemy of music and words and performance – the secret inner language of the heart – delivered with that ineffable feeling called soul. “. . . What you should know about JohnSmith, is that he is the real deal. A singer/songwriter who has found his voice and his place and will take you there through his music. I think it speaks for itself, directly from his heart to yours. I promise you will be moved.” –-Randy Brown, Mineola, Texas.
Concert tickets are $12 / $10 LAC members, with proceeds benefiting the historic St. Mane Theatre. Tickets available at the door or in advance at Lanesboro Arts Center, 103 Parkway Ave N, Lanesboro, 507-467-2446.
